Any child who grew
up in Leicestershire in the 60s and 70s will almost certainly remember day
trips to Foxton Locks one of Leicestershire premier tourist attractions. This
is now better than it was then and with Lottery Grants and plans to
reconstruct its famous lift it is likely to get even better over the next few
years. Foxtons other place
of interest is its fine church which sits proudly on elevated ground at the
top of the village. The tower isn’t as high as nearby Church Langton, but on
approaching the village from the south it is hard to miss especially when the
sun illuminates its distinctive green roof. There is plenty of
parking on the roadside near the church, but a few steps up to the church
door. I have never found this church not open when visiting, which is a
credit to those who oversee its care. Inside it is full of interesting
features, not least the roof bosses featuring a variety of mythical beasts. Take
time to look for these because they are easily overlooked sitting high in the
dark recesses of the ceiling. Also look for the saints carved into the pulpit
and the superb Norman font on its more modern circular base. The church also
boasts some really fine stained glass windows including at the east end of
the South Aisle a Millenium window featuring images from the surrounding
area. |

Details of some of the many carved wooden roof
bosses. With the church being quite dark and these high in the roof beams
they can be difficult to see clearly at times. |
