HISTORY

Gumley church was at one time sited close to Gumley Hall at the north end of this village. Unfortunately the Hall was demolished in 1964 and all that remains of it, is the large stable block with its prominent tower which has now been converted to living accommodation.

The church dates back to the 13th century, and consists of a tower with spire, nave and chancel separated by a wooden screen. The entrance is on the south side via a porch. Much of what we see today it the result of extensive renovations by G F Bodley in 1875-6.

Inside the church contains a number of stained glass windows, an interested decorated ceiling with brass fittings, and an old panel of royal arms which at the time of my visit was hanging below the tower.

In the Autumn of 2011 the roof of the chancel was replaced helping to preserve the interior, unfortunately in parts especially at the west end there are signs of damp affecting the wall.

Note the interesting memorials around the church including a mosaic featuring St George on the south side of the nave.
